About
the Artist
Mary Waterloo
Smith

Mary loves
to work in as many mediums as time permits: jewelry, paintings,
decorated clothing and furniture, and lots and lots of pottery.
Cats (silky, purry, flirtatious and contradictory), and dogs (earnest,
comic, barky and direct), provide more ideas than she can shake
a stick/toss a bag of catnip at. Her style is a mix of southwest,
oriental, ancient and contemporary— flavored generously by
the hot peppers she loves!
Residents
of Pensacola for 7 years, Mary and her husband retired here strictly
at random after 28 years in the Navy and adventures in Hawaii, Japan
and Singapore. Much of Mary's work is inspired by the daily routine
of the five cats (Mickey, BoboChaCha, Figlet, Omi and Plumi) and
two dogs (Kachina the Border Collie and Nester the retired racing
Greyhound), who direct the Smith household. A gesture, a jump, a
demand, a spat, a spring, a head-rub, a purr, a pose, a strident
miaoux, a bit of mischief, a deep considering gaze—accented
with a dash of boisterous canine pandemonium—inspire and define
the collective work of this prolific artist! Mary's aim is to share
the joyful, loving and giving spirit of these special cats and dogs:
little souls, precious gifts from the Creator who, without complaint,
happily share our lives.
Mary feels
that, "Cats and dogs embody intense emotions with a simple
honesty of which humans are incapable. A cat will either disdain
or adore you; a dog simply worships. Neither species talks back,
conspires, or judges. We inhabit a culture held hostage by deceit,
spin, manipulation and political correctness; how restful it is
to enjoy the simple integrity of our pets! In Japan, the phrase
'niko neko' translates as 'sunny, happy, dancing kitty.' This expresses
how I relate to my animals (my friends), and what they lead me to
share in my art: beauty, joy, love, positive energy, mystery, mischief
and pure fun."
"With
love to my husband, John, without whom none of this would be possible.
With praise and thanks to God, the first Artist."
